Will the 21st century's history be dominated by the effects of 9/11, or will the COVID-19 pandemic have a stronger impact on our era? How will climate change affect our planet? The pandemic gave many musicians time to reflect. For me personally, the lockdowns offered the time and courage to articulate a wealth of musical ideas and compose a viola solo suite for the audience in my hometown Dordrecht.
Why Pierrot? The lockdowns caused many artists in the Netherlands to feel a pain similar to that of Pierrot, when his love for Columbine went unanswered. The artists expressed their love for culture and were sad to conclude that society did not seem to find comfort through culture during the pandemic. Although my story of Pierrot has no happy end, I am confident there are better days ahead for culture, as long as we strive to make best efforts for the arts!
